Government earmarks Mulembo local forest for carbon trading

Government says it will not degazzette any part of Mulembo Local Forest No.210 in Chitambo District of Central Province.

Speaking during a meeting with Chief Chitambo of the Lala Speaking People in Chitambo District, Central Province on Thursday, Minister of Green Economy and Environment, Collins Nzovu, said the forest provides ecological services and livelihood for the people of Chitambo.

Nzovu has requested the Chief to find alternative land to relocate the people who have encroached the forest.

He said the Mulembo Local Forest was one of the forests that had been submitted to be earmarked for Carbon Trading through some partners and the locals through the Chitambo Chiefdom.

On the other hand, Nzovu noted that there were a lot of illegal mining activities taking place in the district which needed to be curbed.

“The locals must benefit from the natural resources but let them do it legally. They must have the necessary licenses from the Ministry of Mines, necessary licenses from Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA), get the necessary licences from the Forestry Department, this is very important,” He said.

Nzovu said there was a lot of encroachment in forestry reserves which has caused land degradation and called on all the stakeholders to work together for the betterment of the district.

Nzovu’s meeting with the Chief waslaks attended by Central Province Minister, Credo Nanjuwa, the Permanent Secretary, the District Commissioner, Council Chairperson, other government officials and representatives of Kasanka Trust Limited.

Central Province Minister, Credo Nanjuwa, said Government was concerned about the depleted resources in Kasanka National Park and was talking to the relevant authorities to take it back to its glorious days.

Meanwhile, Chief Chitambo said Kasanka Trust Limited was not giving the district what was due to it and complained about the depletion of animals in the forest.
