Ignore the message of Catholic priests at your own peril —Archbishop Banda warns political leaders

Catholic Archbishop of Lusaka, Alick Banda, has said Catholic Priests are not jokers but shepherds of God’s people and that leaders would ignore their advice at their own peril.

The Archbishop of Lusaka is wondering who a real joker would be between a priest and a liar.

Bishop Banda of the Archdiocese of Lusaka warned that those who shall ignore the message of the Catholic priests on the suffering of the people they governed shall be doing so at their own peril.

He vowed that the Catholic Church shall defend its priests in the Archdiocese of Lusaka and across the country from attacks and ridicule from those governing the country.

In his homily on Sunday, Bishop Banda said priests always spoke from an informed perspective and that those who ignore their messages would be doing so at their own peril.

The Archbishop of Lusaka wondered who would be a joker between a Catholic Priest who was speaking for the people and a liar with the congregants giving him a strong and wild round of applause as he walked away from the pulpit.

He stated that he was not a joker as he was not paid for his preaching, saying that a real joker was a comedian who performed for his audience for amusement and at a fee.

“I wish to defend all Priests in the Archdiocese of Lusaka. A Priest is not a joker for heaven’s sake…a Priest is not a joker for heaven’s sake. A Priest is a shepherd of God’s people. He lives among his sheep as we as know their needs. And when he speaks, he speaks from an informed perspective. If you ignore his message, you ignore it at your own peril.”

A joker is a comedian who performs for amusement and at a fee…and once he is done performing, he is paid and goes off his way. Now I ask the people of God to judge; who is a real joker between a Priest and a liar?” Archbishop Dr Banda wondered as the congregants burst into wild applause.

Last week, during the flagging off and handing over of Constituency Development Fund (CDF) monitoring vehicles, President Hichilema reacted to Chawama Catholic Priest Anthony Kapambwe Salangeta for criticizing the head of State’s graphical representation of his economic achievements in the less than two years he has been in power.

In his homily, Salangeta told the congregants that graphs were not going to put food on the people’s table and that if a family did not have mealie meal, they would be nothing.

“We need to move in life. We need to move. If we are not progressing in life it means we are not doing anything. Sometimes these politicians are full of lies. You will find that us, we do not know these things they say GDP (Gross Domestic Product).

They are writing on graphs, they are telling us about Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and Zambia will reach SA (Structural Adjustment Programme).

Now in Misisi (Township), you use graphs. In Misisi, it is about nshima and not graphs. People want to eat and not graphs,” Salangeta said.
