Reports emerge of attempts by govt to deregister opposition Patriotic Front, as party denies flouting rules

The office of the Registrar of Societies under the Ministry of Home Affairs and Internal Security has threatened to deregister the opposition Patriotic Front( PF).

This is according to a letter dated April 25, 2023 addressed to the PF Secretary General, which is circulating on social media.

This follows the party’s failure to comply with the order to avail a full and complete list of officer bearers to the Registrar.

In the letter, Chief Registrar of Societies, Thandiwe Mpande, has explained that it is a requirement under section 2 of the Societies Act Cap 119 of the laws of Zambia for every society to have a minimum of Ten (10) office bearers.

Mpande indicated that while this is a legal requirement, the PF has only presented three office bearers since 2021.

“You may also be aware that my office wrote a letter dated March 21, 2023 to yourselves addressed to the Secretary General to avail the full list of office bearers but to date it has not received any response,” she said.

Meanwhile, PF Deputy Spokesperson, Emmanuel Mwamba, said there are various schemes to deregister the PF through legal and administrative processes.

Mwamba told the Zambia Monitor in an interview in Lusaka that the party secretariat will trace the letter circulating on social media recalls that under the PF in 2012, the Registrar then Clement Andeleki deregistered the Movement for Multi -Party Democracy (MMD), which was the largest opposition but it brought embarrassment on then President Micheal Sata.

He said the party has been submitting all the required documents to the Registrar every year.

“Zambia is a democracy and all these schemes to disadvantage political opponents will not accepted by Zambians because Zambians fought the dictatorship of Kaunda and would not want to go back,” he said.

Mwamba said it does not matter the authenticity of the letter circulating on social media because there are many attempts to deregister the PF.

He said this will bring great embarrassment to President Hakainde Hichilema and the party will respond administratively.
