Search discovers two-year-old baby drowned in well

A 1-year 11 months baby died after drowning in a water well in Ng’ombe Compound in Lusaka on Tuesday.

According to Zambia Police Service Deputy Public Relations Officer Danny Mwale, the incident happened on Tuesday March 14, 2023 around 18:00 hours when the mother was bathing outside.

Mwale said it was reported that the baby was sleeping in the house while the mother was taking a bath.

He explained that when the mother returned to the room where the baby was left, she discovered that the baby was missing and immediately begun searching until the baby was seen gasping for life in an uncovered water well within the yard.

“Members of the community assisted to retrieve the baby identified as Ngwane Nkhata and was rushed to Ng’ombe Clinic where he was pronounced dead upon arrival,” Mwale said.

He said the body is in the University Teaching Hospitals Mortuary awaiting Postmortem and burial and an Inquiry File has been opened.
