Six men to spend five years each in prison for illegal possession of Hippo meat

The Chipata Magistrate Court sitting at Mambwe district of Eastern Province has convicted six men for illegal Hippo meat possession.

Chipata Magistrate Judge, Felix Kaoma, has convicted and sentenced Jackson Mawere aged 35 years to 5 years imprisonment for unlawful possession of hippo meat contrary to the laws of Zambia.

In a statement, the Department of National Parks and Wildlife officers apprehended Mawere on March 27, 2023 with 23 kilogrammes of the illegal hippo meat.

In a similar case, two men have also been sentenced to 5 years imprisonment for unlawful possession of hippo meat contrary to the laws of Zambia.

Moyenda Phiri, 52, and Venancio Msoni, 33 were apprehended by officers from the Department of National Parks and Wildlife in separate incidents on March 27, 2023 with hippo meat.

The Chipata Magistrate court in another case convicted and sentenced two men to 5 years imprisonment with hard labour for illegal possession of 26 kilogrammes of Hippo meat.

Musadabwe Phiri, 43 and James Phiri 27 were apprehended on March 1, 2023 by officers from the Department of National Parks and Wildlife.
