The Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA) has nabbed 43 motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol during this festive season.

RTSA said the drive sober campaign that the agency was implementing in a combined operation with the Zambia Police Service was a big success as it would help reduce lawlessness on the roads during the festive season.

This is according to a statement issued on Monday by RTSA Public Relations
Manager, Mukela Mangolwa.

“The combined team that has been tasked to be mainly on the lookout for road infringements like drinking under the influence of alcohol, dangerous driving and unlicensed drivers among others, had earlier cautioned motorist, especially those attending social events during the period across the country not to drive under the influence of alcohol, as they risked being prosecuted,” Mangolwa said.

However, Mangolwa said, 43 motorists were found in conflict with the law for drinking under the influence of alcohol in different parts of the country, with Livingstone and Choma recording the highest number.

He said the Agency was also delighted to note that so far no major incidences had been recorded during the period more especially in Lusaka and the Copperbelt which were normally in the lead in road traffic accident statistics.

“All road users are reminded to observe all traffic laws and regulations as they engage in various activities that require them to use public roads as the Agency will continue being on high alert and prosecute all traffic offenders across the country as we approach the end of the year,” Mangolwa said.
