Government has announced that it has started piloting the low orbit satellite connectivity with Starlink for the purposes of providing high speed internet in Zambia.

Technology and Science Minister, Felix Mutati, said that while in New York in September last year, President Hakainde Hichilema initiated talks with officials from SpaceX, a company founded by billionaire, Elon Musk in order to have universal internet in Zambia using Starlink.

Mutati in a statement in Lusaka on Wednesday said this low orbit satellite connectivity pilot has so far been conducted in nine out of the 10 provinces and the findings so far are that the internet connectivity is effective.

He said the low orbit satellite connectivity has no boundaries particularly for the remote parts of Zambia and this provides an option that internet can land anywhere, accessed anytime and on any device.

“That is what we are doing so far in the background in terms of delivering internet and satellite connectivity. There will be no boundaries related to place, hills, mountains or whatever whenever this satellite connectivity is rolled out,” Mutati said.

He said as at now, government was only working on piloting the low orbit satellite connectivity in the remaining one province before it can advance to the next stage with Starlink.
