Zambia’s Public Private Partnerships model gets support from Brazil

Brazil has committed to providing guidance to Zambia as it embarks on its infrastructure development through Public Private Partnerships (PPPs).

Ministry of External Relations of Brazil Department for Africa Director Ambassador, Ana Paula Simoes Silva, assured Zambia that Brazil stood ready to provide guidance as it embarked on its infrastructure development through PPPs.

Silva said South to South cooperation was important to Brazil’s foreign policy.

She said this through a virtual meeting on Wednesday with the Infrastructure and Urban Development Minister Charles Milupi.

“As you may be aware President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s foreign policy focuses on Africa, we look forward to renewed ties with Zambia so that we can further our friendship as we attain mutual benefits,” ambassador Silva said.

In response, Milupi recognised the achievements Brazil had recorded through enhanced private sector participation in the infrastructure development agenda.

He assured the Brazilian government that Zambia equally believed strongly in the greater role that the private sector played to support government in delivering public infrastructure and services using PPPs.

The Minister added that Zambia was currently pursuing an ambitious infrastructure development agenda to support the socio-economic transformation of the country and create the much-needed jobs for Zambians, particularly the youth.

He indicated that for Zambia to achieve its infrastructure development agenda, PPPs would be very cardinal.

“I am here in Brazil with members of our Public Private Partnership Council to engage our counterparts in Brazil on how they have successfully implemented PPP projects, to share our own experiences and to explore opportunities for Partnership with the Brazilian Private Sector in executing projects in Zambia using the PPP model,” Milupi said.

He noted that Zambia intended to maximize each and every opportunity available to engage with Brazil, and ensure that bilateral relations grew on a sustainable trajectory.
