National Congress Party (NCP) leader, Peter Chanda, has endorsed Patriotic Front (PF) hopeful Makebi Zulu as the party’s preferred presidential candidate, a move that adds another twist to the unfolding political dynamics within the former ruling party.
Speaking during a media briefing, Chanda said the decision was not personal but reflected the collective will of the NCP.
He said the endorsement was anchored in resolutions made by party delegates.
“At our General Conference held on November 18, 2025, the delegates spoke clearly and unanimously that we work with Counsel Makebi Zulu,” he said.
“And today, in the spirit of transparency and patriotism, I make that decision public,” he said.
Chanda expressed confidence that the PF and Zulu’s team would welcome the declaration, endorsement, and invitation “with the same democratic spirit in which it had been made.”
He said Zambia needed unity, integrity, and “a leadership that listens.”

Chanda reiterated that the NCP remained the party of choice of the late President Edgar Chagwa Lungu, adding that calls for opposition unity were growing stronger nationwide.
“We have heard the cries of Zambians across our great nation, the call for opposition unity has grown louder than ever,” Chanda said.
He explained that the choice to back Zulu followed prayer, reflection, and nationwide consultations.
Chanda also revealed that he would not contest the presidency in 2026.
“I can now boldly say: the ground is not yet ready for me to stand for the presidency in 2026. But this is not a retreat; this is a call to rally,” he said.
