2026 Polls: Socialist Party demands cancellation of plans by ECZ to hold same-day nominations

The Socialist Party has written to the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) objecting to the Commission’s decision to hold presidential and parliamentary nominations on the same day.

In a letter dated March 27, 2026, the party’s General Secretary and First Vice-President, Cosmas Musumali, addressed the Commission Chairperson, expressing concern that the arrangement placed unnecessary pressure on political parties.

Musumali argued that separating the two processes would ease the burden without disrupting the electoral calendar, adding that many political parties consulted shared the same view.

“The Electoral Commission of Zambia has set May 18, 2026, as the day of nominations for both presidential and parliamentary candidates,” Musumali highlighted.

The Socialist Party has since appealed to the Commission to reconsider its position, expressing hope that the request would receive favourable consideration.

“We therefore seek the separation of the presidential and parliamentary nominations and put them on different dates,” Musumali wrote.
