A 30-year-old man from Lusaka, Vallan Mbozi, has reportedly been killed by an elephant at the Kinkonge Gold Mine, along the wildlife corridor in Mufumbwe District.
The elephant is said to have smashed him with its tusks and trampled him on the chest, causing fatal injuries.
Police Commanding Officer, Brighton Siwale, said Mbozi, who was camping with two friends at the site for illegal mining activities, sustained fractured ribs and severe abdominal injuries, leading to his death on the spot.
“On the day of the incident, the deceased and his friends left the mining camp to conduct their own business away from the locked-down mining area. On their return, they encountered three elephants that were provoked by the noise they were making.
According to Muchinga Province Police Commissioner, Dennis Moola, the elephant charged and killed Botha on the spot.
The elephants charged and chased them for about 50 meters until the deceased ran out of energy,” Siwale explained.
The other two individuals managed to escape unharmed. Police, accompanied by wildlife officers, visited the scene, processed it, and deposited Mbozi’s body at Mufumbwe District Hospital Mortuary pending a post-mortem examination.
Siwale said wildlife officers had been deployed in the area to protect residents and facilitate the safe passage of elephants moving between Kafue National Park and Jivundu Game Management Area through the Kinkonge Gold Mine corridor.
“These measures aim to safeguard people while allowing elephants to move freely through their natural migratory routes,” he added.
