President Hakainde Hichilema has intensified his campaign in Lusaka ahead of Thursday’s general elections, holding rallies in Chawama, Kabwata, Matero and Lima constituencies.
Hichilema urged voters to support the United Party for National Development (UPND) in Thursday’s election, saying his administration had laid the foundation for economic recovery and would build on its achievements if re-elected.
“I have traversed Zambia, 10 constituencies, 116 districts and all the constituencies. On Thursday, they vote for the United Party for National Development (UPND) for the transformation of the country,” Hichilema said.
Addressing supporters in Chawama and Kabwata, Hichilema claimed his government had employed more than 45,000 teachers and 25,000 health workers since taking office.
He also told volunteer nurses and teachers attending the rallies that they should consider themselves employed, pledging that his administration would continue creating employment opportunities.
“I am giving jobs to volunteer nurses and teachers here in Chawama and Kabwata,” he said.
Hichilema promised to maintain free education, expand business opportunities and increase Constituency Development Fund (CDF) allocations while scaling up programmes such as Cash for Work.

He said his administration would also continue efforts to reduce the cost of living and address infrastructure challenges, particularly drainage systems in Lusaka that have contributed to flooding.
“We are determined to continue working hard to lower the cost of living while working on the drainage system so that flooding can be dealt with,” he said.
He said a second mandate would allow the government to create more jobs and expand health infrastructure.
Addressing residents in Matero and Lima, Hichilema said the restructuring of Zambia’s debt had helped restore economic stability and created fiscal space for development.
“The debt restructuring has helped set the country back to economic growth that will see us do more work for you,” he said.
On the country’s electricity challenges, Hichilema said his administration was addressing the power deficit through diversification of the energy mix, including increased investment in solar and coal-based generation.
At the rallies, Hichilema introduced UPND parliamentary and local government candidates and urged voters to support the party’s candidates at all levels to facilitate implementation of its development agenda.
Zambians will vote on Thursday, August 13, to elect the president, members of parliament, mayors, council chairpersons and councillors for the next five-year term.
