Two senior United Party for National Development (UPND) figures have lost parliamentary seats on the Copperbelt, with former Mines and Mineral Development Minister, Paul Kabuswe, defeated in Chililabombwe and, Anthony Mumba, losing Kantanshi in Mufulira.
Kabuswe, who was seeking re-election in Chililabombwe, conceded defeat to Resolute Party (RP) candidate Nosfwa Lupele.
Lupele polled 10,920 votes against Kabuswe’s 8,986, out of 24,058 votes cast, according to results announced by the returning officer.
In Kantanshi, former Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) national coordinator, Chanda Kabwe, contesting on the RP ticket, defeated UPND’s Mumba.
Kabwe secured 10,473 votes, while Mumba polled 8,391. Zambia Must Prosper candidate Maggie Musonda received 432 votes, while independent candidate Charles Banda got 430 votes. A total of 263 ballots were rejected out of 19,989 votes cast.
Meanwhile,UPND candidate Lucky Sichone won the Konkola parliamentary seat after securing 8,096 votes.
Resolute Party’s Spolian Simwanda polled 4,630 votes, while independent candidates Abraham Simpamba and Moses Mwelwa received 1,427 and 1,640 votes respectively.
Independent candidates Benjamin Sikombe and Roy Ngosa polled 223 and 1,393 votes, while Citizens First candidate Lottie Ngwira received 412 votes.
Socialist Party’s Haggai Chisha polled 175 votes.
A total of 17,839 votes were cast in Konkola, with 322 ballots declared invalid.
Results from Kitwe, Chingola and Kalulushi districts were still being awaited.
