President Hakainde Hichilema has said that he was humbled by endorsements from students on the Copperbelt as he concluded his one-day tour of Kitwe on Sunday.
Speaking during a meet-and-greet rally with students at Arthur Davies Stadium, student representatives from institutions across the province declared their support for the President’s candidature in the upcoming August general elections.
Lloyd Nsonge, vice president of the National Council of Students Union (NACOSU), said the endorsement reflected the “popular voice” of students on the Copperbelt.
“The student populace on the Copperbelt has decided to endorse President Hichilema because of the achievements recorded in the last four years, especially in the education and mining sectors,” Nsonge said.
Given Chipeyo, president of the Copperbelt University Students Union, cited the reinstatement of meal allowances and bursaries for college students among the notable policy reforms that had improved student welfare.
In response, President Hichilema expressed gratitude and called on students to act as his “campaign managers”.

“I am overwhelmed by your support. Be the carriers of my campaign message ahead of the polls. Government will continue to deliver policies that support the wellbeing of students in all institutions,” he said.
He also warned students and citizens against returning power to those he accused of causing national hardship through excessive borrowing.
“Never should you support those who removed meal allowances and borrowed heavily,” he said.
The President, who earlier attended Mass at a Catholic parish in Ndola, later returned to Lusaka.
Earlier, Given Chipewo, another leader of the Copperbelt University Students Union, thanked the UPND administration for restoring scholarships, meal allowances and implementing free education.
Regina Mwaanga, vice president of the Mukuba University Students Union, said the President’s leadership had helped maintain Zambia as a beacon of peace and hope for future generations.
