Chingola’s Chiwempala Market has been gutted by fire, with goods worth millions of Kwacha reportedly destroyed in an inferno which cause has not yet been established.

Confirming the incident in a post on his Facebook page, Chingola Member of Parliament Chopoka Mulenga said firefighters were struggling to contain the blaze, which broke out during the night.

“I have learnt with grief that our biggest market in Chingola District, Chiwempala Market, is on fire. As the firefighters work to put off the fire, my prayers and thoughts are with them, the marketeers, and the community,” Mulenga said.

He further urged members of the public providing support to exercise caution and follow safety guidance.

Market fires have become increasingly common across the country.

Just last month, Kapalala Market in Ndola was also gutted by fire, destroying goods worth millions of Kwacha.
