Chisanga demands fair policing of Kasama mayoral by-election

Tonse Alliance Kasama mayoral election campaign manager, George Chisanga, has demanded fairness in police conduct ahead of the January 29, 2026 by-election, insisting that impartial policing was essential for democracy to function.

Speaking during a briefing with Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD) president Chifumu Banda on Tuesday, Chisanga recounted an incident in which a senior alliance member was allegedly assaulted by suspected United Party for National Development (UPND) cadres.

“One of the senior members was beaten up by ruling party thugs. I am from the police to ensure that those who committed the crime are brought to book. My message to the police is to fairly police the Kasama election,” he said.

Chisanga urged law enforcement officers to remove perpetrators of violence from the campaign environment to safeguard peace before, during and after polling.

“We have made a demand that those causing violence are removed from campaigns by the police for a peaceful election,” he added.

Chisanga, a former Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) president, said the alliance would not be intimidated and expressed confidence that victory was on their side.

Meanwhile, FDD president Banda called for unity among opposition parties, saying cooperation was vital for progress.

“FDD is at the disposal to help PF, which has been mistreated by the UPND administration, like a good neighbour,” he said.

The Kasama mayoral seat became vacant following the death of Mary Kolala in December last year after a short illness.

The by-election is scheduled for January 29, 2026.
