FDD candidate, Bright Nundwe, has been officially declared the winner of the Chawama parliamentary by-election after securing 8,085 votes, according to results released by the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ).
His closest competitor, Morgan Muunda of the UPND, received 6,542 votes, placing him second in the race.
The final tally also showed Davison K. Mulenga of the CF party obtaining 1,534 votes, while independent candidate George Mwenya followed with 466 votes.
Another independent candidate, Elijah Siatawambo, garnered 428 votes. Mohammad Mutete of the NCP received 319 votes, Alfred M. Ndiweni of the EPPP collected 239 votes, Nltazana M. Musukuma of LM managed 100 votes, and James Phiri of the NDC closed the list with 93 votes.
According to the Returning Officer, Lewis Lupando, a total of 18,096 votes were cast in the by-election, with 290 ballot papers rejected as invalid.
Following the verification and certification of these results, the ECZ declared Bright Nundwe duly elected as Member of Parliament for Chawama on 16 January 2026.
The declaration was witnessed by polling agents and monitors representing various political parties and organisations.
Nundwe’s victory marks a notable achievement for the FDD in a constituency where competition is often dominated by larger political parties.
Celebrations erupted among his supporters shortly after the announcement, signifying what some observers view as a shift in voter sentiment within Chawama.
He is expected to take up his seat in the National Assembly.
Meanwhile, President Hakainde Hichilema has congratulated the Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD) and its candidate, Bright Nundwe, on winning the Chawama Constituency parliamentary by-election.
In a statement posted on his official Facebook page, Hichilema said Mr. Nundwe’s victory in the tightly contested race reflected the democratic choice of the people of Chawama.
He emphasised that while elections ultimately produce one winner, their deeper purpose is to strengthen peace, unity, and harmony among citizens.
The President also commended the UPND candidate, all participating contenders, and the electorate for conducting themselves peacefully throughout the by-election.
He said the orderly participation of voters demonstrated a collective commitment to safeguarding Zambia’s democratic values.
President Hichilema further praised the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) and law enforcement agencies for managing what he described as a transparent, secure, and well-organised election.
According to him, their professionalism ensured that the will of the people was freely and safely expressed.
The by-election, which followed the resignation of the area Member of Parliament, saw FDD’s Bright Nundwe emerge victorious with 8,085 votes, ahead of UPND’s Morgan Muunda, who garnered 6,542 votes.
