Water Development and Sanitation Minister Collins Nzovu has announced that the Chambeshi Water Supply and Sanitation Company (ChWSSC) has intensified surveillance measures to combat the outbreak of cholera in Mbala and Mpulungu districts.
Nzovu said the interventions are part of the Ministry’s continued collaboration with health authorities, local government, and other stakeholders to safeguard public health and ensure uninterrupted access to safe water.
In a statement issued in Lusaka on Monday, Nzovu explained that ChWSSC had strengthened its water quality control measures by enhancing the monitoring of residual chlorine levels across all districts under its mandate.
He disclosed that in Mbala and Mpulungu, chlorine cartridges had been installed at multiple points to increase dosage levels, thereby improving water safety.
Additionally, super chlorination had been activated in both districts, complemented by random residual chlorine testing to ensure compliance with established standards.
“Furthermore, the company has held joint meetings with health officials and local councils in both districts to coordinate response strategies and reinforce community-level preventive measures against cholera,” Nzovu said.

He added that recognising the critical need for reliable water supply during this period, ChWSSC had partnered with ZESCO Limited to secure consistent power supply in the two districts, a move expected to boost pumping capacity and enhance water availability for residents.
“The Ministry commends ChWSSC for its proactive measures and reaffirms its unwavering commitment to supporting these efforts as the fight against cholera continues,” he stated.
Nzovu further urged the public to cooperate with health and water authorities, maintain high standards of hygiene, and ensure safe water use to help curb the spread of the disease.
Authorities in Northern Province have disclosed that Mpulungu District has recorded 72 suspected cholera cases, with 29 confirmed positive.
