Government says it is committed to advancing the country’s nuclear agenda, positioning nuclear science and technology as key to energy diversification and socioeconomic development.
Ministry of Information and Media Permanent Secretary, Thabo Kawana, noted that public awareness and transparency were crucial pillars for building trust and ensuring national buy-in for the nuclear programme.
Kawana said this during a high-level awareness meeting with the Radiation Protection Authority (RPA) at his office in Lusaka on Monday, which focused on Zambia’s nuclear energy programme, regulatory framework, safety, and public awareness.
He emphasised RPA’s role in regulating and safeguarding the public, workers, and the environment from radiation hazards.
“There is the need for the development of a strong national infrastructure for nuclear power, aligning with International Atomic Energy Agency guidelines,” Kawana stated.
He said collaboration between the Ministry of Information and Media and the RPA was necessary to ensure public safety, environmental protection, and effective information dissemination.
RPA Executive Director, Boster Siwila, said the Authority was engaging with Permanent Secretaries to deepen understanding of its regulatory role in Zambia’s nuclear energy programme.
“This outreach aims to facilitate dialogue, align expectations, and guide the Authority’s approaches to public, community, and industry engagement on nuclear safety and radiation protection,” Siwila said.
