President Hakainde Hichilema has welcomed Norway’s consistent support for reforms at the United Nations Security Council, particularly the recognition of Africa’s rightful place and voice as an equal partner in global decision-making.

Speaking during a meeting with Norway’s Minister for International Development, Åsmund Grøver Aukrust, and his delegation at State House in Lusaka on Monday, President Hichilema also invited Norway to explore investment opportunities in Zambia’s energy, mining, agriculture, and tourism sectors.

“Zambia holds in high regard Norway’s remarkable achievements in resource governance and sustainable development since the Second World War,” President Hichilema said.

He expressed particular interest in learning from Norway’s experience in responsible mining, environmental stewardship, and transparency in the extractive industries.

“We look forward to fostering greater collaboration with the Norwegian private sector, particularly in the strategic areas of energy, mining, tourism, and agriculture, which are pivotal to Zambia’s economic transformation agenda,” he added.

President Hichilema said the government was encouraged by the tangible outcomes following the 2023 visit by a high-level delegation from the Norwegian-African Business Council, noting that the emerging opportunities and engagements are a testament to the growing strength and maturity of bilateral ties.

He further highlighted the need for stronger cooperation in addressing global challenges such as conflict and war, which he said continue to disrupt development and international order.

The President also expressed admiration for Norway’s prudent management of its natural resources, particularly oil, gas, and forests, as well as its education system that equips young people with practical economic skills.

“Zambia is keen to replicate Norway’s model of transparency and environmental stewardship, especially in the mining sector,” he said.

In response, Aukrust described Zambia as a valuable and dependable partner at a time when multilateral frameworks were weakening, and trade wars escalating.

“The world is going through dramatic times, marked by growing disregard for international law and multilateralism,” Aukrust noted.

He said that: “That is why Norway needs strong, reliable partners like Zambia, and we are committed to deepening our collaboration.”

He also acknowledged that although Norway had increased its development assistance, it could not entirely offset the shortfalls created by reductions in aid from other donor countries.
