President Hakainde Hichilema is today, July 25, 2025, scheduled to participate in the virtual Sixth Summit of the African Union Committee of Ten (C-10) Heads of State and Government on the Reform of the United Nations Security Council.
The summit will be chaired by Sierra Leonean President, Dr. Julius Maada Bio, who also serves as the Coordinator of the C-10.
According to a statement issued in Lusaka on Friday by Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Principal Public Relations Officer, Eva Chanda, the summit would focus on the Common African Position regarding UN Security Council reform.
“This includes consideration and adoption of outcomes of the 13th Ministerial Meeting of the African Union C-10, which was hosted by Zambia from 3rd to 5th June 2025, in Lusaka,” Chanda stated.
Established by the African Union in 2005, the C-10 is tasked with leading advocacy for the reform of the Security Council, based on the Ezulwini Consensus and the Sirte Declaration.
These frameworks call for Africa to be granted at least two permanent seats on the Council and advocate for either the abolition of the veto or its extension to all permanent members.
“Under the stewardship of President Hichilema, Zambia remains firmly committed to working with other AU Member States to advance intergovernmental negotiations for a more inclusive and democratic United Nations Security Council—one that provides equal and meaningful representation for Africa,” Chanda added.
