Hichilema urges students to shun vices, focus on education, opportunities

President Hakainde Hichilema has cautioned students at higher institutions of learning against engaging in vices such as drug, alcohol abuse, among others as it will make them miss opportunities.

Hichilema said that the government was already creating opportunities in various sectors of the economy which the students should take advantage of once they completed their studies.

Speaking to the University of Zambia and Ridgeway Campus Students at State House on Tuesday, President Hichilema highlighted that the government had managed to employe over 150,000 youths through the created opportunities.

He added that youths had been employed in the defence force, agriculture, health among other sectors of the economy and that government would continue to create opportunities.

“Concentrate on your studies for now and avoid drinking alcohol, engaging in drug abuse. Marriage will follow you after you complete school. We want to have educated youths who are the Future Leaders of tomorrow,” President Hichilema emphasized.

President Hichilema also took time to encourage the students to consider becoming entrepreneurs and creating jobs for others, highlighting the need to develop local Zambians into successful business people.

“You should focus more on your education and make positive choices and the government is ready to support you, however it is important for you to make the first steps,” he emphasised.

Meanwhile, the UNZA and Ridgeway Students requested the President to consider increasing their meal allowance from the current K1000 in order to deal with the rise in the cost of living.

The students applauded the President for reinstating the meal allowance and fulfilling several promises made during his opposition days, such as free education.
