The 14th Session of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)–Zambia Joint Permanent Commission on Defence and Security has resolved that the DRC government will provide adequate security to international truck drivers to prevent attacks as they ferry goods through that country.

The Commission urged the DRC authorities to ensure that in all areas where attacks on international truck drivers have been reported, security must be strengthened to promote safe and uninterrupted international trade.

According to a Communique issued at the close of the meeting held in Lubumbashi from January 12 to January 16, 2026, the matter of insecurity affecting foreign truck drivers will be addressed as a matter of urgency.

“Regarding the facilitation of commerce and trade, the Commission took note of security challenges that international truckers faced as they transit through the DRC while transporting goods in view of recent attacks,” read the Communique in part.

Both countries stressed that international trade must not be disrupted by attacks targeting transporters.

“Therefore, the Commission agreed that the DRC Government should enhance security measures along high-risk trucking routes in order to guarantee the safety of foreign truck drivers, in line with international norms and regional protocols on the safety of cross-border transport workers,” they said.

Meanwhile, the DRC delegation wished Zambia continued peace as the country prepares to hold General Elections in August this year.

On the persistent insecurity in eastern DRC, the two countries reaffirmed their support for international efforts aimed at ending the conflict.

“In reviewing recent developments in the Southern Africa region, the Commission noted, with concern, the continued insecurity in the eastern DRC,” the Communique stated.

The Commission also reiterated its backing for regional and global interventions geared not only towards resolving insecurity in the east but also towards addressing the resulting humanitarian crisis.

The Communique was signed by Zambia’s Minister of Defence, Ambrose Lufuma, and DRC Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, Security, Decentralisation and Traditional Affairs, Lukoo Bihango Jacquemain Shabani.
