Labour ministry claims K276,623 payments secured for workers after Casino suspended operations

The government has reportedly secured K276,623.46 for 27 workers at Canlin Investments Limited, a casino company based at Lusaka International Apartment, following the suspension of the company’s operations.

Ministry of Labour and Social Security Principal Public Relations Officer, Mwaka Ndawa, said the intervention came after Canlin had suspended operations ahead of a change in ownership.

In a statement issued on Friday, Ndawa explained that the company had previously informed employees that their last day of reporting for work would be August 25, 2025.

However, on August 20, 2025, employees were surprised to find the casino locked with a notice reading: “business suspended for rectification”, without their dues being settled.

“Employees promptly reported the matter to the Ministry of Labour and Social Security,” Ndawa said.

The Ministry’s office of the Labour Commissioner engaged the company’s management, who reportedly cooperated fully and agreed to have Labour inspectors calculate all benefits owed, including monthly pay, gratuities, and accrued leave days.

“The Ministry is pleased to confirm that all affected employees have since been paid in full, and we commend the workers for promptly seeking lawful redress,” Ndawa said.

She urged all employers to adhere strictly to labour laws, emphasizing that the action highlights the Ministry’s commitment to enforcing labour laws, protecting workers’ rights, and promoting fair labour practices in line with national and international standards.

“The Ministry will continue to ensure that both employers and employees operate within the framework of the law, fostering industrial harmony and social justice in the workplace,” Ndawa assured.
