Manchester United suffered a humiliating Carabao Cup exit as League Two side Grimsby Town triumphed 12-11 on penalties after a dramatic 2-2 draw at Blundell Park.
United goalkeeper, Andre Onana, endured a nightmare return to action, gifting the hosts both of their first-half goals.
In a match reported by Sky Sports, Charles Vernan’s strike squirmed through him at the near post in the 22nd minute before the Cameroonian misjudged a cross to allow Tyrell Warren an easy tap-in eight minutes later.
Harry Maguire thought he had spared United’s blushes, heading in a late equaliser after substitute Bryan Mbeumo halved the deficit with his first goal for the club.
Grimsby had earlier been controversially denied a third when Cameron Gardner’s finish was ruled out for offside.
But the tie went to penalties, where United faltered. Matheus Cunha missed a chance to seal it before Mbeumo fired wide with his second attempt, sending the underdogs through after an extraordinary 26-penalty shootout.
The result heaps pressure on United boss Ruben Amorim, whose side are still without a win this season and now face an uphill battle to secure silverware without European football.
Sky Sports pundit Alan Smith summed it up bluntly: “It’s car crash TV as far as United and Onana are concerned.”
