Movement for Democratic Change condemns divisive remarks on regional politics

The Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) has condemned remarks attributed to former Patriotic Front (PF) Deputy Secretary General, Mumbi Phiri, which suggested that political power can only be achieved through narrow regional alliances.

MDC leader, Felix Mutati, described the position as “a sad, dangerous disservice to the country’s democracy,” particularly undermining the country’s founding principle embodied in the motto: “One Zambia, One Nation.”

In a statement issued in Lusaka on Monday, Mutati said Phiri and other political figures should be reminded of the fundamental, non-negotiable truth that Zambia belongs equally to all its citizens.

He stressed that people from every province and corner of the country had an equal, inalienable right to aspire and serve in any public office.

“This is more than a slogan; it is the unbreakable covenant, passed down since the days of Dr. Kenneth Kaunda, that has allowed this country to transition power peacefully, judging only by merit and delivery, never by origin,” Mutati said.

Speaking as a Christian, Mutati offered a spiritual reminder from Galatians 3:28: “There is neither Jew nor Gentile… for you are all one in Christ Jesus.”

He added: “We must internalize this truth: we are one Zambia, one nation, and one body in Christ, called to preach love, compassion, and unity, and never, ever, division.”

Mutati emphasized the need for citizens not to betray the national trust by using diversity as a tool to divide and conquer for political gain.
