New Congress Party withdraws from Tonse Alliance amid succession disputes

New Congress Party (NCP) leader, Peter Chanda, has officially pulled out of the Tonse Alliance with immediate effect, citing succession wrangles that have engulfed the grouping following the death of its Chairperson and former President Edgar Lungu.

Chanda claimed that the Alliance had departed from the values upon which it was founded, noting that “most members had put first personal egos and greedy agenda than that of collective responsibility which it was strongly built on.”

Speaking at a media briefing in Lusaka on Monday, Chanda said the NCP refuses to be drawn into politics of division, hatred, and character assassination.

He appealed for calm and peace among party members as the party transitions from the Tonse Alliance to a standalone entity.

“Currently anyone can wake up and call for a press briefing and issue any form of statement without consulting members, some members today even make appointments in the name of the former and late Chairperson which he never made,” Chanda said.

He explained that the decision to withdraw was taken after consultations with party members across the country, emphasizing that the party’s current focus is to grow and stand on its own as an independent political entity.

Chanda assured the nation that the NCP would remain true to its core values of providing meaningful checks and balances to the government.

“We have taken this decision so that we can properly reorganize our party across the country. We shall embark on a national tour of all the 10 provinces in due course to consult our members across the country on the next step the party will take,” he said.

He further stated that after the general conference, the party would be open to working with any alliance that shares the vision of late President Lungu.
