Chongwe Traffic Police are investigating a fatal road traffic accident that occurred in the early hours of today, August 27, 2025, at around 02:00 hours along the Great East Road near UNO Filling Station, which claimed one life and left four others injured.

The accident involved a Volvo truck, registration number ABX 4403, loaded with charcoal and heading west.

Police Spokesperson, Rae Hamoonga, said in a statement issued in Lusaka on Wednesday that the truck was being driven by Tebson Mujulu of unknown address, who fled the scene after the crash.

The truck, which was extensively damaged, had four male passengers on board who sustained various injuries.

Those injured were identified as Bright Mweetwa, 32, who complained of pain in the right leg, left hand, and shoulders; Lewis Siakalampisia, 27, who sustained injuries to the left leg and right hand; Luckson Sialenga, 25, who suffered a head cut and body pains; and Francis Sakala, 30, who sustained injuries to his left leg and shoulder.

They were all rushed to Chongwe District Hospital where they are receiving treatment.

Also involved in the accident was a GWM van, registration number ABL 289, driven by 31-year-old Gilbert Mudenda of Waterfalls area.

Mudenda was trapped inside the vehicle, later retrieved, and rushed to Levy Mwanawasa Teaching Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

The van was extensively damaged, and a price display pillar belonging to UNO Filling Station was also destroyed.

Preliminary investigations suggest the accident occurred when the Volvo truck attempted to overtake improperly, colliding with the GWM van, which was in front and turning right.

“The Zambia Police Service extends its condolences to the family of the deceased and wishes a quick recovery to those injured,” Hamoonga said.

He appealed to motorists to exercise maximum caution, avoid improper overtaking, and strictly adhere to traffic rules to prevent loss of life and damage to property.
