Political commentator, Dr. James Musonda, has criticised Zambia’s opposition parties, saying they were preoccupied with trivial matters instead of offering meaningful alternatives to the electorate.
Musonda said the opposition had failed to focus on issues that mattered and had also failed to build unity of purpose.
“Instead of asking about President Hakainde Hichilema’s health, they should ask themselves why he took such a long leave in an election year,” he said.
“Mr. Hichilema knows that with the current disorganization in the opposition, he can go on holiday and still win; he can go to sleep.”
Musonda lamented that rather than articulating a national vision, opposition political parties were busy fighting and tearing each other apart.

“For example, why is there a fight for a Patriotic Front (PF) that doesn’t exist? Why waste so much time? Why fight Mundubile (Mporokoso Member of Parliament Brian Mundubile) for going to the Tonse Alliance? Mr. Hichilema will win not necessarily because of what he achieved but because of what the opposition failed to do,” he said.
Musonda questioned what had gone wrong with the PF, recalling that former President Edgar Lungu “could not simply release the party up to his death.”
“Following his death, the party cannot move on. It is a shame. The Given Lubinda group wanted to remove Mundubile from the party. In turn, Mundubile had removed them from Tonse — unnecessary imingalato. A waste of money and time,” he said, adding that none of the factions appeared focused on explaining what they could do for the country.
Musonda also argued that Mafinga MP, Robert Chabinga, continued to gain political ground after delivering Bill 7, noting that based on the leaked audio and the ruling against the Lungu family, Chabinga was unlikely to help the Lubinda faction regain control of the PF.
“He can’t because the depth of the damage he has caused is irreparable, and he knows that. Hichilema cannot allow that to happen,” Musonda said.
