Police in Nakonde District of Muchinga Province have shot dead three suspects who attempted to escape from lawful custody.
Preliminary police investigations indicate that ten male suspects, who were detained for various criminal offences, broke out after officers opened the cell grill to distribute food.
In a statement issued in Lusaka on Sunday, Muchinga Province Police Commanding Officer, Dennis Moola, said the suspects forcibly pushed their way out of the cell and fled the police station.
Police officers fired several warning shots in an effort to stop them, but the suspects continued to run. During the pursuit, three suspects sustained gunshot wounds and were rushed to Nakonde District Hospital, where they were pronounced dead upon arrival.
“The deceased suspects have been identified as Christopher Simfukwe, aged 33, who was arrested for aggravated robbery; James Paka, aged 28, for illegal entry (PI); and Kangwa Kangwa, aged 36, for possession of counterfeit notes,” Moola said.

He added that following the incident, police instituted search operations, leading to the recapture of three other suspects: Nkwiza Sinkala (19), arrested for possession of an offensive weapon; Willard Siame (21), arrested for murder; and Edward Sikanyika (33), also arrested for murder.
Four suspects, however, remain at large. They have been identified as Steward Sikaonga (21), arrested for murder; Reuben Munthali (30), for assault; Jonathan Sikanyika (30), for theft; and Salifyanji Sichimata (23), for theft.
“Investigations into the matter are ongoing, and police have intensified the manhunt for the remaining suspects,” Moola said.
He added that the bodies of the three deceased suspects have been deposited in the Nakonde District Hospital mortuary awaiting post-mortem examinations.
Moola assured the public that safety measures were in place as the search for the four fugitives continued.
