Police in Mufulira have recovered a stolen firearm from a suspect who was shot and wounded as he attempted to flee from his residence.

The incident occurred on March 3, 2026, following a search launched by officers from Mufulira Central Police in connection with the theft of a shotgun reported on March 1, 2026, by security guard David Kunda.

Copperbelt Police Commanding Officer, Mwala Yuyi, said in a statement on Wednesday that police were led to the suspect after reviewing CCTV footage at the Trimurti Wholesale Shop, where a man identified as Leonard Kafuko was seen taking the firearm.

“Officers then went to Kafuko’s residence, where he was arrested and a shotgun was recovered under his bed,” Yuyi said.

However, as officers attempted to apprehend him, Kafuko allegedly tried to escape, ignoring warning shots. He was subsequently shot on the right leg.

“The suspect is receiving treatment at Ronald Ross Hospital, where his condition is stable,” Yuyi said, adding that the recovered firearm is being kept as an exhibit as investigations continue.
