Three unidentified robbers have allegedly attacked a 37-year-old mobile money vendor in Chingola and stolen K110,000 cash at gunpoint.

According to the Police, the incident occurred around 13:20 hours on Monday along Close Road near Jacaranda School, after the robbers lured the victim with a fake business transaction.

Copperbelt Police Commanding Officer, Pathias Siandenge, identified the victim as Obby Chishala of Mikiloni Township, who operates a mobile money business using a bicycle.

Siandenge said Chishala had earlier withdrawn K110,000 from Stanbic Bank at Park Mall before proceeding to conduct his usual business.

“Along Independence Avenue, he was approached by the driver of an unregistered black Mark X motor vehicle who inquired if he had K20,000 cash for an alleged transaction,” Siandenge said in a statement on Wednesday.

The driver asked Chishala to follow him near Jacaranda School, where he claimed to reside. Upon arrival, the vendor was asked to enter the vehicle, which already had two masked men inside.

Siandenge said once the doors were locked, one of the suspects produced a firearm and demanded the cash and the vendor’s Itel phone valued at K400.

Fearing for his life, the victim surrendered the money before being shoved out of the vehicle, after which the robbers sped off to an unknown location.

“Police officers rushed to the scene but were unable to track down the suspects. A docket of the case has been opened, and investigations have been launched,” Siandenge said.
