The Tonse Alliance on the Copperbelt, led by Brian Mundubile, allege that 16 of its officials in Kalulushi District have been detained for reasons that remain unclear.

Copperbelt Publicity and Information Secretary, Charles Kabwita, said in a statement issued in Kitwe on Saturday that the arrested officials include provincial, district, constituency leaders and aspiring candidates.

“The Tonse Alliance on the Copperbelt confirms that 16 of its members in Kalulushi District have been arrested and detained at Kalulushi Police Station by the Zambia Police Service,” Kabwita said.

He added that the detentions followed last week’s arrest of the alliance’s Provincial Chairman, Amon Chisenga, and Treasurer, Mr Zulu, which he said raised concerns over selective application of the law.

“We are concerned by the continued arrests of opposition members, following last week’s arrest of our Provincial Chairman Mr. Amon Chisenga and the Treasurer Mr. Zulu,” he said.

Kabwita said the alliance was worried about what it viewed as shrinking democratic space.

“We strongly condemn these actions and call for fairness, transparency, and respect for democratic rights,” he said, adding: “The public will be updated as more details emerge.”
