UPPZ leader, Chanda, proposes proportional representation in parliament for Zambia

United Prosperous and Peaceful Zambia (UPPZ) leader, Charles Chanda, has proposed sweeping electoral reforms aimed at introducing a proportional representation system in Parliament.

In a statement issued in Lusaka on Wednesday, Chanda said the system would ensure that the number of seats a political party holds in the National Assembly corresponds to the percentage of votes it receives during elections.

Chanda criticised the current electoral framework, saying it fosters unhealthy debates along party lines and limits constructive dialogue and collaboration among representatives.

“The existing winner-takes-all system marginalises smaller parties and stifles diverse viewpoints in Parliament,” he said.

“Proportional representation would encourage inclusivity and better reflect the democratic will of the Zambian people,” Chanda said.

He explained that under the proposed system, a party’s share of parliamentary seats would directly match the percentage of votes it obtains, thereby promoting a more balanced and representative legislature.

Chanda said such a reform could help broaden input in policy-making and strengthen democratic participation.

“I want to urge stakeholders, including political parties and civil society, to engage in conversations about this potential reform to enhance Zambia’s democracy for future generations,” he added.
