Vice President Mutale Nalumango has called for an immediate end to hostilities in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), warning that the prolonged conflict continues to displace families and destroy futures.
Speaking in Livingstone on Saturday when she opened the Extraordinary Meeting of Ministers of Defence under the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR), Nalumango urged regional defence ministers to urgently find a lasting solution.
“We need to find a solution which has eluded generations. This extraordinary meeting needs urgent and immediate action to silence the guns,” Nalumango said.
She noted that armed groups operating in eastern DRC had destabilised communities and forced civilians to flee in large numbers.
ICGLR Executive Secretary, Dr. Mundia Luwabelwa, reported that 10.5 million people had been displaced due to ongoing fighting, describing the humanitarian impact as severe.
He urged ICGLR member states to prioritise the peace processes currently underway in efforts to end the conflict.
“I wish to thank the United States Government and the Government of Qatar for spearheading peace talks,” Luwabelwa said.
