The Council of Churches in Zambia (CCZ) has urged clergy not to use the pulpit to endorse political candidates or parties as the country approached general elections.
CCZ General Secretary, James Phiri, said the pulpit must remain a platform for preaching the Gospel rather than advancing political interests.
Phiri was speaking during a service at the Uniting Presbyterian Church in Southern Africa (UPCSA) Garden Congregation in Lusaka on Sunday held in honour of Reverend Jane Nyirongo, who had retired from active ministry.
He said the Church must avoid actions that could divide congregants, noting that members come from diverse political backgrounds.

“The role of the Church is to provide moral guidance, promote unity, and uphold spiritual truth in society,” Phiri said.
He described Nyirongo as a dedicated servant who had served faithfully for 37 years, including six years on the CCZ Board.
Phiri also commended the leadership of the UPCSA for its commitment to ministry and its impact on communities.
He urged members to reflect on their shared future, saying heritage is not only about where people come from, but also where they are going.
“The work of the Church continues to shine as a light, with its impact extending beyond Garden Congregation to the wider nation,” he said.
