Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC) Director-General, Clement Kapalu, has said Zambia is emerging as a model in the fight against illicit financial crimes and continues to stand out as a shining example of good governance.
Kapalu noted that financial crimes were not only a national concern but also have regional and international implications.
Speaking at the Zambian Embassy in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on Wednesday, he urged embassy staff to remain vigilant and proactive in detecting and addressing illicit financial activities that could negatively impact Zambia’s economy.
“There is also need for stronger collaboration between diplomatic missions and oversight institutions to ensure that Zambia remains a leader in safeguarding financial integrity and transparency,” Kapalu said in a statement issued in Lusaka.
In welcoming him, Charge d’Affaires, Tom Michelo, thanked the FIC Director-General for his visit and praised the institution for its critical role in shielding Zambia’s economy from the devastating effects of financial crimes.
Michelo further appealed to the FIC to continue equipping Zambia’s missions abroad with timely information and tools needed to effectively combat illicit financial activities in their respective countries of accreditation.
“Access to accurate intelligence would enable missions to contribute more effectively to the country’s anti-financial crimes agenda,” he said.
Kapalu is in Ethiopia attending the Eastern and Southern Africa Anti-Money Laundering Group (ESAAMLG) 50th Task Force of Senior Officials, the 25th Council of Ministers Meetings, and the 8th Public-Private Sector Dialogue Forum.
The ESAAMLG Task Force meetings bring together regional and international stakeholders to strengthen cooperation in combating money laundering and illicit financial flows.
