Former national team player, and AFCON cup winner, Rainford Kalaba, aged 38, has been involved in a fatal road accident that occurred along the Great North Road.
The accident happened at 12:20 hours, along the Great North Road at Kafue S Corners, near Kafue Quarry.
According to Police Spokesperson, Rae Hamoonga, the acccident involved a Howo truck horse with registration number AIC 805 and trailer number BAC 9540, driven by Muyunda Isaac, aged 32 years, of Kamwala South.
Kabala was reportedly in a Mercedes Benz car, which rammed into the truck. The unmarked car was said to have been driven by an unidentified female driver of unknown residence who police say died on the spot.
“Unfortunately, she succumbed to her injuries at the scene of the accident…,” Hamoonga stated.
He said Kalaba had sustained suspected internal injuries and had earlier been promptly transported to UTH for further medical attention.
Hamoonga stated that preliminary investigations indicated that the accident occurred as a result of improper overtaking by the Mercedes Benz car, leading to a collision with the oncoming truck.
“Our thoughts and condolences are with the families affected by this tragic incident,” he said.

Hamoonga urged all road users to adhere strictly to road safety regulations to prevent further loss of lives.
University Teaching Hospital Public Relations Manager, Chanda Nzeba told Zambia Monitor that Kalaba was in a critical condition and Doctors were attending to him.
” Social media is reporting that he has died but that’s not true, he is just in a critical condition and Doctors are attending to him,” Nzeba confirmed.
She said UTH could not allow cameras in the Ward where he was admitted at the moment until the Doctors are done operating on him.
