K80 million scam loss averted as ZICTA tightens Sim card controls

The Zambia Information and Communications Technology Authority (ZICTA) blocked and deactivated 90,000 SIM cards last year that were being used in scamming activities, the authority has disclosed.

Additionally, 12,800 SIM cards were blocked in the first quarter of 2025 after being linked to fraudulent acts such as mobile scams and cases involving stolen phones.

ZICTA Public Relations Manager, Hanford Chaaba, revealed this in an interview with Zambia Monitor during the ongoing Agricultural and Commercial Show in Lusaka.

Chaaba reaffirmed the authority’s commitment to curbing mobile-related fraud, warning that individuals found engaging in scamming activities risk prosecution.

He said the blocked SIM cards prevented a potential loss of up to K80 million in 2024 alone.

“To monitor mobile activity more effectively, ZICTA has now restricted the number of SIM cards a person can register to 10. We are also pleased that the public is increasingly using the *707# platform to report scams,” Chaaba said.

He warned the public against buying pre-registered SIM cards and urged mobile users to remain alert to avoid falling victim to scams, particularly those involving mobile money theft.

Chaaba further expressed concern over the growing trend of phone and internet-related fraud in Zambia, saying it continues to cause distress among citizens.

“ZICTA is working tirelessly to empower Zambians with knowledge on scamming activities and encouraging them to report,” he said.
