Democratic Union (DU) leader, Ackim Njobvu, has expressed concern over the perceived bias of Deputy Inspector-General of Police Fred Hamaamba toward the ruling party, saying his remarks were made in response to a media report published in a local tabloid.
The media report stated that during a visit to Nakonde District in Muchinga Province, Hamaamba urged citizens to support President Hakainde Hichilema and the ruling party, describing the Head of State as a visionary leader deserving full support from both citizens and state institutions.
Responding to the report, Njobvu described Hamaamba’s actions as careless, unfortunate, and unprofessional.
He warned that the perceived bias, as highlighted in the report, could lead to unequal treatment of opposition supporters and put ordinary Zambians at risk.
“Hamaamba, being a civil servant, should desist from issuing such statements where he was seen to be taking a partisan stance like cadre,” Njobvu said.
“The police should be neutral as opposed to taking positions, as exhibited by the police’ second in command,” he added.
Njobvu stressed the importance of civil servants, including police officers, remaining non-partisan and serving all citizens equally, regardless of political affiliation.
He questioned whether the police could fairly discharge their duties with such statements attributed to senior officers in the report, adding that Hamaamba’s remarks should be a source of concern ahead of next year’s elections.
