The Governance and Development Advocates Zambia (GODAZA) has called on government to urgently appoint a Commissioner at the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) to address a vacancy created by the expiry of a senior official’s contract.
In a statement issued in Lusaka on Saturday, the group’s Executive Director, Elias Mulenga, said the contract of Ambassador Ali Simwiinga, the former ECZ Vice Chairperson, has expired, leaving a leadership gap within the commission.

Mulenga stressed the need for the appointment of both a Vice Chairperson and a Commissioner to strengthen the commission’s capacity and enhance service delivery ahead of upcoming electoral processes.
“The absence of a Commissioner at this critical juncture is concerning, and we urge the government to expedite the appointment process to ensure the ECZ is adequately equipped to deliver free, fair, and transparent elections,” Mulenga said.
He emphasised that a fully constituted ECZ was essential for building public trust and confidence in the electoral process.
