The Government has declared Tuesday, September 1, 2026 as a public holiday to allow Zambians to witness the Swearing-in Ceremony of the President-elect, Hakainde Hichilema, and the Vice President-elect, Mutale Nalumango.
Secretary to the Cabinet, Patrick Kangwa, announced the declaration in a statement issued to the media on Sunday.
Kangwa said the ceremony will be held at the National Heroes Stadium in Lusaka, following an earlier announcement made on 25th August 2026.

“In this regard, the President has declared Tuesday, 1st September 2026, the day of the Swearing-in Ceremony, as a Public Holiday,” he said.
The declaration is expected to enable members of the public and invited guests to attend the historic event without disruption to official duties.
To manage logistics at the venue, Kangwa urged all invitees to consider car pooling due to limited parking space at the National Heroes Stadium.
The Swearing-in marks the formal assumption of office by the President-elect and Vice President-elect, and is one of the key constitutional processes in Zambia’s democratic transition.
