Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has invited President Hakainde Hichilema to visit Ukraine and reaffirmed Kyiv’s readiness to strengthen cooperation with Zambia in all areas of mutual interest.
In a congratulatory message, Zelenskyy said he was confident that the support President Hichilema received from Zambian citizens reflected trust in his leadership and the country’s aspiration for further democratic development.
The Ukrainian leader said he highly valued the friendly relations between the two countries and sincerely appreciated Zambia’s support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations and international law.
Zelenskyy also reaffirmed Ukraine’s commitment to deepening bilateral interaction with Zambia within international organisations, noting that both countries could work together on issues of common concern.
He wished President Hichilema good health and success in his state duties, and the people of Zambia peace, harmony and prosperity.
Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin also congratulated President Hichilema on his re-election.
In his message, President Putin expressed confidence that President Hichilema’s leadership would contribute to further strengthening the traditionally friendly relations between Zambia and Russia.
The congratulatory messages from both Kyiv and Moscow come days after President Hichilema was sworn in for a second term following the 2026 General Elections.
Zambia has maintained diplomatic relations with Russia since 1964, with cooperation in education, mining, energy and multilateral platforms, while ties with Ukraine have grown in recent years around shared positions on sovereignty and multilateralism.
Similary, John Dramani Mahama, President of Ghana, congratulated President Hichilema on his re-election as President of the Republic of Zambia.
“President Hichilema’s re-election presents an opportunity for Zambia and Ghana to further strengthen their bilateral relations and deepen their shared commitment to ensuring that the outcomes of engagements held during his State Visit to Zambia in February this year translate into measurable and lasting benefits for the citizens of both countries,” President Mahama said.

Tharman Shanmugaratnam, President of Singapore, also congratulated President Hichilema on his re-election as President of the Republic of Zambia.
“Zambia and Singapore enjoy a warm friendship, noting that there is much potential to deepen cooperation in areas such as capacity building, trade and investment, and to expand the partnership to new and important areas such as carbon credits,” he said.
Other who have congratulated President Hichilema include the Commonwealth, which sent a message of goodwill.
In the message, Commonwealth Secretary-General Shirley Botchwey reaffirmed the Commonwealth’s commitment to its long-standing relationship with Zambia and looked forward to continued engagement in support of the aspirations of the people of Zambia.
King Mohammed VI of the Kingdom of Morocco, and Dr. Netumbo Nandi – Ndaitwah, President of Namibia also joined those who congratulated President Hichilema on his re – election as President of Zambia.
He reaffirmed his constant commitment to further consolidating the ties of friendship and brotherhood reuniting the Kingdom of Morocco and the Republic of Zambia
“Namibia and Zambia share a special and enduring friendship, forged through common history and the sacrifices made during the liberation struggles of Southern Africa,” Ndaitwah said.
