Chipolopolo Boys captain, Fashion Sakala, was rushed to a hospital in Rabat this afternoon after falling ill, the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has confirmed.
Team doctor, Wesley Ngongo, stated that Sakala was taken to Hôpital Universitaire International Mohammed VI at around 12:30 local time after complaining of abdominal discomfort, dizziness, and general weakness during a routine medical check.
“This morning Fashion complained of experiencing abnormal pain, feeling weak and dizzy during my routine check on the players. We have rushed him to the hospital,” Ngongo said.
As a result of the incident, Sakala has been officially ruled out of this evening’s decisive AFCON 2025 Group A fixture against hosts Morocco, a significant setback for the Copper Bullets.
Head coach, Moses Sichone, is now finalising his starting XI and substitutes without the Saudi Arabia–based striker, who will not be available for selection.
Despite the setback, the Chipolopolo camp remains in high spirits ahead of the crucial encounter. Zambia will face Morocco at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat at 21:00 CAT.
Spain-based defender David Hamansenya said the team was undeterred by the home crowd.
“We are here to compete, no matter how many supporters Morocco will have. We are focused on our game and ready to face any challenge,” he said.
Midfielder Wilson Chisala echoed the sentiment, adding, “Morocco is a strong team, but they are overrated and beatable. On the pitch, it is all about execution, and we are confident we can handle them.”
Power Dynamos defender, Dominic Chanda, called for caution but stressed that Zambia is well prepared. “Morocco have quality, but we are fully prepared for the challenge ahead. Our focus is clear, and the players know what is at stake,” he said.
Captain Sakala, speaking during a pre-match press conference yesterday, described the contest as “fifty-fifty.” “History shows both sides have won the AFCON once each, so neither has a clear upper hand. We just have to play our football and stay disciplined,” he said.
