Arsenal secures narrow 1-0 first-leg win over Sporting in Lisbon in Champions League tie

Kai Havertz scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner to give Arsenal a vital 1–0 victory over Sporting in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final in Lisbon.

Introduced in the second half, Havertz reacted quickest in the box to poke the ball past goalkeeper Rui Silva, securing a narrow but significant advantage for the Premier League leaders ahead of next week’s return leg at Emirates Stadium.

According to the BBC, Arsenal entered the tie under pressure after suffering back-to-back defeats for the first time this season, and their nerves were nearly tested early on. Sporting left-back Maxi Araujo rattled the crossbar following a precise through ball from Ousmane Diomande in a bright opening for the hosts.

While Arsenal enjoyed extended spells of possession, clear scoring opportunities were scarce. Their best first-half moment came when Noni Madueke struck the bar directly from a corner. Sporting, meanwhile, repeatedly threatened on the counter, with Araujo again involved as he set up Francisco Trincao, who dragged his shot wide.

Arsenal thought they had taken the lead in the second half when Martin Zubimendi curled a fine effort into the corner, but the goal was ruled out, with Viktor Gyokeres deemed offside in the buildup.

Sporting applied heavy pressure late in the match, forcing David Raya into a series of important saves to keep the score level. With the game appearing destined for a draw, Havertz delivered in stoppage time, slotting home the winner to the relief of the travelling supporters.

The result ends Arsenal’s three-match winless run and provides a morale boost as they shift attention back to the Premier League, where they face Bournemouth this weekend.

Though not a vintage performance, the hard-fought win could prove a pivotal moment in Arsenal’s season. Recent defeats had drawn criticism, and their attacking form remains a concern, but
grinding out a result away in Europe may help restore confidence at a crucial stage of the campaign.

The only downside on the night was captain Martin Odegaard being forced off with a knock, adding to his ongoing fitness challenges this season.
