Attorney-General Mulilo Kabesha has called for the creation of more platforms that allow young people to engage in meaningful dialogue on social, legal, and governance issues that directly affect the nation.

Speaking during the Zambia Law Development Commission (ZLDC) Zambia Parliamentary Model United Nations (ZAMP-MUN) Conference held at the University of Lusaka (UNILUS) on Wednesday, Kabesha emphasized that youth participation was not only a democratic right but also a cornerstone for building stable, inclusive, and progressive societies.

The conference was held under the theme: “Strengthening Inclusive Governance for Sustainable National Development.”

Kabesha stated that empowering young people to contribute to national discourse fosters the exchange of diverse ideas and enhances their leadership and policy analysis skills.

“The Government of the Republic of Zambia strongly welcomes conferences such as this one, as they play a vital role in empowering young people,” he said.

Kabesha further noted that the participation of young people in governance processes affirmed their role as key stakeholders in national development and strengthens inclusive governance by ensuring that the voices of various constituencies were heard.

“Sustainable development is enshrined in the Constitution of Zambia as one of the nation’s values and principles, offering a framework for decision-making in the development agenda,” Kabesha added.

He highlighted Zambia’s commitment to sustainable development, especially through the Eighth National Development Plan (8NDP), which outlines four strategic pillars: economic transformation and job creation; human and social development; environmental sustainability; and good governance.

“These efforts reflect Zambia’s strong resolve—at the highest levels of leadership—to embrace and advance the global development agenda,” he said.

Kabesha emphasized that the 8NDP acknowledged the critical role of youth and other marginalized groups in strengthening democratic governance. He encouraged ZAMP-MUN participants to develop concrete, actionable resolutions aligned with the 8NDP and Vision 2030.

“I trust that the Commission will submit the outcomes of your deliberations to my office, where they may serve as a valuable reference for future policy reforms and government action,” he stated.

Meanwhile, ZLDC Director, Hope Ndhlovu, said the Model UN Conference aimed to equip young people with knowledge of national laws, societal challenges, and developmental opportunities to help them become informed contributors to Zambia’s development.

“We need innovative, bold, and inclusive ideas. This Model UN Conference is crucial in educating and empowering future leaders,” she said.

Ndhlovu noted that through debates, resolutions, and collaboration, young participants were developing essential skills in diplomacy, problem-solving, and negotiation—while contributing to Zambia’s legacy of national development and cooperation.
