Bank of Zambia circulates new K100, K50 banknotes

The Bank of Zambia (BoZ) has officially released the new K100 and K50 banknotes into circulation, marking a major step in the rollout of the Heritage Series currency family first introduced on March 31, 2025.

The launch also signals the start of the withdrawal exercise for the old K100 and K50 denominations, in line with Statutory Instrument No. 9 of 2025 issued by Finance and National Planning Minister Situmbeko Musokotwane.

The redesigned notes, unveiled last week in Ndola by BoZ Governor, Denny Kalyalya, incorporate modern technology, advanced security features, and distinctive cultural motifs that celebrate Zambia’s rich heritage.

Kalyalya emphasized that the new banknotes aim not only to improve transaction security but also to enhance public confidence in the monetary system.

“This release begins the withdrawal of old notes, and it is crucial for everyone, especially those handling cash daily, to familiarize themselves with the new features to reduce the risk of fraud,” Kalyalya said during a BoZ delegation’s visit to Copperbelt Minister Elisha Matambo in Ndola.

So far, the central bank has withdrawn K9.9 billion worth of old notes, representing 44.3 percent of those previously in circulation.

To support public education, BoZ had launched the Zambian Banknotes mobile application, available on Google Play and the iOS App Store.

The app offers interactive visuals and detailed explanations of the new notes’ security elements, helping users distinguish genuine notes from counterfeits.

Beyond security, the new K50 and K100 banknotes are designed to reflect Zambia’s identity, showcasing unique symbols and historical references that reinforce national pride.

Kalyalya said the Heritage Series was part of BoZ’s commitment to modernizing the currency while celebrating Zambia’s culture and history.
