The Bank of Zambia (BoZ) has called on members of the public to remain vigilant in checking for security features on the recently introduced banknotes, while dismissing claims that the new currency design was inadequate.

In a statement issued on Monday, BoZ Assistant Director–Communication Besnat Mwanza said the new banknotes came with a refreshed design and enhanced security features to deter counterfeiting and sustain public confidence in the national currency.

“This step is crucial, especially as counterfeiters continue to adopt more sophisticated methods,” Mwanza stated, stressing that the design incorporated state-of-the-art innovations.

To boost awareness, the Bank has also launched a mobile application called ‘Zambian Banknotes’, designed to help the public identify and understand the new security features.

“A core function of any currency is to maintain its integrity and resist counterfeiting. Over the past decade, there has been significant technological advancement in the development of banknote security features. The Bank remains committed to maintaining the highest standards of currency security and protecting the integrity of the financial system,” Mwanza added.

The new currency family, unveiled on March 31, 2025, consists of six banknotes — K500, K200, K100, K50, K20, and K10 — and six coins — K5, K2, K1, 50N, 10N, and 5N.

According to the central bank, security enhancements included watermarks, security threads, and colour-shifting elements, all aimed at reinforcing protection against counterfeiting.
