The Bank of Zambia (BoZ) has begun distributing new K50 and K100 banknotes nationwide, ahead of their official circulation on September 1, 2025, as part of efforts to modernise Zambia’s currency and enhance security against counterfeiting.

BoZ Governor, Dr. Denny Kalyalya, said the central bank had already withdrawn K9.9 billion worth of old notes, representing 44.3 percent of those previously in circulation.

From September 1, the issuance of the old K50 and K100 notes will officially stop, in line with Statutory Instrument No. 9 of 2025 issued by the Minister of Finance and National Planning, Situmbeko Musokotwane.

Kalyalya urged the public, especially those handling cash daily, to familiarize themselves with the new banknotes to reduce the risk of fraud.

“It is important for everyone to understand the security features embedded in the new notes,” he said.

To support public awareness, BoZ launched the Zambian Banknotes mobile application, available on Google Play and the iOS App Store.

The app provides interactive visuals and detailed explanations of the new notes’ security features, helping users identify genuine currency and detect counterfeit notes.

Beyond security, the new banknotes reflect Zambia’s rich history and culture, incorporating uniquely Zambian design elements that reinforce national identity.

Kalyalya emphasized that the redesign was aimed not only at improving security but also at enhancing public confidence in the monetary system.

By combining modern technology, stronger security features, and cultural representation, the new K50 and K100 notes are designed to ensure safer transactions while celebrating Zambia’s identity.m, according to the apex bank.
