BoZ governor, Kalyalya, hails growth of intra-African trade fair, urges stronger Zambian participation

Bank of Zambia Governor, Dr. Denny Kalyalya, says the Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF) has grown into a major continental platform that offers Zambia and other African countries an opportunity to showcase their industries and expand regional trade.

Kalyalya observed that the event has steadily transformed from a simple gathering into a fully established, standalone initiative under the African Union and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

“Yes, this is no longer just an event. It has grown in size, the number of participants has grown, and the significance of the fair has also grown. Interacting in this manner is very important because Africa is moving, and we do not want to be left behind,” he said.

He told the Zambia Monitor in an exclusive interview in Algiers on Friday that intra-African trade remains low at about 15 percent of total trade but stressed that platforms such as the IATF are key in promoting African products and linking local businesses to regional and international markets.

“Our exhibitors are punching above their weight, but they need a lot of support to be able to compete on a wider scale. Seeing what others are doing is very important, and already, Zambian presentations are receiving much more attention than in previous years,” Kalyalya said.

He further pointed to Zambia’s potential in niche areas such as organic products, which he said are helping the country stand out at the fair.

“This is a very good experience. It is an opportunity for us to build a brand that Zambia can be known for across Africa and everywhere else,” he added.

Looking ahead, Kalyalya urged Zambian companies to prepare early for the next edition of the IATF, scheduled to take place in Lagos, Nigeria, in 2027, noting that each round of the fair brings in more players and stronger competition.

He expressed optimism about the development of the IATF secretariat that will be hosted in Harare, Zimbabwe.
